Episode 016 - Drew Scoles "Drephen" (Competitive Smash Bros.)

Another great conversation with Drew Scoles, or as he is known in the Smash community, "Drephen". Drew has been playing Super Smash Bros. Melee (a fighting video game) in tournaments since the beginning of this humble games life as a competitive gamer. He's seen the community grow, die, and begin a new life. It was great talking with someone who has devoted a lot of his life to the pursuit of improvement on one single thing. Hope you enjoy!

Topics Covered: Masahiro Sakurai, L-cancelling, MLG, The Smash Documentary, South Bend IN, meta-gaming, CRT TVs, POW, discovering modding controllers, what a match looks like, major US tournaments/ competitions, reasons for playing the game, TOP players in the world, OSU melee, and many more!

Featured Musical Artists: Archer Archer (Columbus, OH-based , electronic). Anthony Rowe/ "Archer Archer" has some truly incredible music that you must check/ buy/ listen to! This episode features music throughout his catalog including a SPECIAL unreleased track entitled "Gravelly King"!!!

Super Smash Bros. Melee, released in 2001 for the Nintendo Gamecube

Here's a video demonstrating one of the many advanced techniques in Smash. This one demos one we talk about in the episode called "L-cancelling"..... and it's not easy

Here's episode 1 of "The Smash Brothers", a documentary you hear us mention in the episode. You can see Drephen make a brief cameo at 3:11. We highly recommend the documentary. As a non-smash player myself (Nick) I still enjoyed the watch.

If you've played the game before but haven't seen a competitive match, it looks completely different. Check out 2 players Drephen recommends watching. Here's Leffen vs. Mango
