Episode 006 - Aaron Quinn (Kinbaku, the Art of Uncomfortable)

In this episode, we have a great conversation with composer, guitarist, all around interesting guy, Aaron Quinn. We talk about a lot of things, but a warning to those with fragile ears, this episode does bring up a lot of mature content. If our intro doesn't scare you off though, check out some of the additional resources below. We also bring up a lot of artists, composers, and movements that we didn't have time to explain in the episode, so we've tried to give lots of extra reading.

Topics include: John Cage, movements in the early-mid 20th Century, Kinbaku, Hentai, Aphex Twin, Hokusai, Dune, H.R. Geiger, Porn, Omelets, Yoko Ono, Hunter Quinn, Eugenics Council, Fluxus, Dada, Psychopathia Sexualis, Celery.

When talking about John Cage it's impossible to pick one piece that sums him up, but here's a slight glimpse into his world. Water Walk (the made for TV version) and Four Walls.

Here's an example of Kinbaku.

Hokusai's The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife.

H.R. Giger's The Spell IV. We mentioned the artist in the episode as "this really cool thing, but really it's just a dick."

Here's a quick explanation of the Fluxus movement, with some mention of Dada as well. Followed by a video of Cut Piece by Yoko Ono from this time period. http://www.artspace.com/magazine/art_101/book_report/what-was-fluxus-54032

A video of Eugenics Council. A noise group Aaron mentions as an example on making the audience/listener "uncomfortable."

Skip to 7:40 to see some sparks fly.

An excerpt from G-Taste. A woman exploring her sexuality... and not quite sure why.

The opening of Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. Listen for the bassoon melody in the beginning that Aaron is so fascinated with.
