Episode 002 - Steve Darling (Euphonium/ Perfection in the Arts)

Here's our second episode! Thanks for sticking with us! In this episode we talk with Steve Darling, a doctoral candidate at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music for Tuba/Euphonium performance. Steve is a world-class player and sheds some light into the niche culture of low brass players. He talks about his experience with entering (and winning) some major competitions. We also get into the perception of perfection in music (and the arts in general) as well as how this differs in American vs. European culture. Listening examples below!

Here are the listening examples used in this episode:

1. Opus 333 / Matriochka

2. Here are some examples of saxhorns in action: Candide Ouverture - L. Bernstein (Arr. V. Desplantes)

3. A young Rolan Szentpali soloing with the Symphony Orchestra of the Bartok Conservatoire, Budapest

4. Glenn Van Looy - "Proverbially"

5. To play us out, we hear what Steve calls "perfect": Ralph Vaughan Williams - English Folk Song Suite
